The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has raised serious concerns over the safety of nuclear facilities in Iran amid escalating regional tensions. In a statement shared on social media, Dr. Tedros said he joins the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in sounding the alarm over the growing risks to nuclear infrastructure. He specifically highlighted the latest incident involving the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, warning that any strike on such facilities could trigger a catastrophic nuclear accident. The WHO chief cautioned that the health consequences of a nuclear incident would be severe and long-lasting, potentially impacting generations. He emphasized that as the conflict intensifies, the risks continue to escalate, raising global concerns about safety and stability in the region. Calling for urgent action, Dr. Tedros stressed the need for immediate de-escalation, stating that “peace is the best medicine” in preventing a humanitarian and environmental disaster. The statement comes at a time when international organizations are increasingly warning about the dangers of military activity near nuclear sites, underscoring the need for restraint and diplomatic resolution.
