Assam CM Vows “Strongest Action” After Pawan Khera’s Asset Allegations Spark Pre-Poll Firestorm

In a massive escalation just 48 hours before the Assam Assembly elections, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has vowed to take the “strongest possible action” against Congress leader Pawan Khera. The confrontation follows explosive allegations made by Khera regarding the foreign assets and citizenship of the Chief Minister’s family.
Speaking to reporters, a defiant Sarma linked the legal pursuit to the protection of his family’s reputation against what he termed “malicious and fabricated” election propaganda.

The Allegations: Passports, Penthouses, and Billions

On April 5, Congress leader Pawan Khera held a press conference alleging that the Chief Minister’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, holds triple citizenship with passports from the UAE, Egypt, and Antigua and Barbuda.
Khera further claimed that the family owns undisclosed luxury properties in Dubai and business interests in the U.S.

CM’s Refutation: “Fake AI & Pakistani Links”

Chief Minister Sarma dismissed the claims as a “fake AI campaign” and “digitally manipulated” content. He provided a detailed rebuttal, claiming:

Stolen Documents: The property papers were allegedly lifted from the platform Scribd.

Mistaken Identity: Sarma identified the real owners of the Dubai apartments as Md. Ahmad and Fatima Sulaiman, not his family.

Foreign Interference: Sarma accused the Congress of using materials supplied by a Pakistani social media group to interfere with the Indian democratic process.

Legal War Commences

The battle has quickly moved from the political stage to the courtroom:

FIR Filed: Riniki Bhuyan Sharma has officially filed an FIR with the Assam Police, stating the allegations cannot be treated in a “lenient manner.”

Defamation Suits: The CM announced plans to file both criminal and civil defamation cases against Khera within the next 48 hours.

Warning of Arrest: In a stern warning, Sarma stated that Khera’s “end will be in Assam jail,” emphasizing that the law would take its course regarding the “fabricated” claims.

Impact on Assam Assembly Elections

The timing of this controversy is critical, with Assam set to vote on April 9. Despite the high-decibel attacks, Sarma expressed absolute confidence in the BJP’s performance, predicting a landslide victory of at least 100 seats.

”This is a desperate attempt by a sinking party,” Sarma told the press. “They are attacking my family because they cannot defeat me on the ground.”
