The Election Commission of India has suspended Avijit Paul, Inspector-in-Charge of Basanti Police Station, with immediate effect following a violent incident in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district. The incident occurred on March 26, 2026, in the Basanti Bazar area under Basanti Police Station in the Baruipur Police District. Several individuals, including police personnel, sustained injuries during the clashes. In its order, the Election Commission observed that Inspector Avijit Paul failed to make adequate security arrangements despite prior intelligence inputs. According to the Commission: He had advance information about public programmes by two political parties Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) had been available in the area Despite this, he did not requisition CAPF support The Commission termed this as a serious lapse and dereliction of duty. The ECI stated that the officer’s inaction directly contributed to the breakdown of law and order during a sensitive period. His failure to utilise available central forces raised concerns about preparedness and accountability. The swift suspension sends a strong message about accountability, especially during election periods when maintaining peace and order is critical. The Commission has reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on negligence by officials entrusted with election-related responsibilities. The incident highlights the importance of: Timely intelligence-based action Proper deployment of forces Coordination between local police and central agencies Authorities are expected to review security protocols in the region to prevent further escalation.
