Japan stunned the home crowd by taking an early lead in the third minute through Kazumasa Matsumoto, whose reverse-hit beat Indian goalkeeper Suraj Karkera. Japan maintained its 1-0 advantage through the first half, frustrating the Indian forwards with disciplined defending and effective man-to-man marking.
India continued to press for an equaliser and finally broke through in the 42nd minute. Shilanand Lakra found the net after Aditya Lalage collected the rebound from a penalty-corner attempt and delivered a pass into the scoring area. The goal restored parity at 1-1 and shifted the momentum decisively in India's favour.
The defending champions then took control of the contest in the final quarter. Dilpreet Singh put India ahead in the 48th minute with an excellent finish following a move initiated by Hardik Singh. Jugraj Singh extended the lead to 3-1 in the 53rd minute with a powerful penalty-corner drag-flick.
Just a minute later, Vivek Sagar Prasad added India's fourth goal, converting a rebound to complete a spectacular second-half turnaround. India held their advantage until the final whistle, sealing a memorable 4-1 victory and sending the home supporters into celebration.
A Historic Sixth Asian Champions Trophy Crown
The triumph takes India's overall Asian Champions Trophy tally to six, making them the most successful team in the competition's history. Their previous title-winning campaigns came in 2011, 2016, 2018, 2023 and 2024.
The 2026 victory also completes a hat-trick of consecutive tournament triumphs following India's successes in 2023 and 2024. Under captain Harmanpreet Singh and head coach Craig Fulton, the Indian team once again demonstrated its ability to respond under pressure and deliver decisive performances in crucial moments.
India Dominate the Tournament
India's championship-winning performance was built on an impressive campaign throughout the competition. The defending champions maintained their winning momentum in the league stage before producing an emphatic 8-1 victory over South Korea in the semi-final to secure their place in the title clash.
The final against Japan provided the ultimate test, but India's fighting spirit, attacking depth and clinical finishing ensured that the trophy remained on home soil.
The sixth title further strengthens India's position as a powerhouse of Asian men's hockey and provides another significant achievement for the national team as it continues its preparations for future international challenges.
