India completed a golden double in kabaddi at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, on Saturday, with both the men’s and women’s teams defeating Iran in their respective finals.

The Indian men’s team retained the Asian Games gold medal with a thrilling 40-34 victory over Iran in a closely contested final. The match remained level at 20-20 at one stage before India pulled ahead to secure another historic triumph.

The victory marked India’s ninth Asian Games gold medal in kabaddi. India had dominated the event for years before Iran ended that run at the 2018 Jakarta Games, where India finished fourth. The men’s team reclaimed the title at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games and successfully defended it in Aichi-Nagoya.

Earlier in the day, the Indian women’s kabaddi team defeated Iran 37-34 to retain their title. India led 22-16 at half-time, but Iran mounted a strong comeback in the second half, winning the period 18-15. India’s first-half advantage, however, proved decisive.

Following the women’s victory, the Indian players celebrated with a victory lap around the arena and chanted “Vande Mataram.”

The women’s team have now won the Asian Games kabaddi gold in every edition except the 2018 Jakarta Games, when they took silver after losing to Iran.

The twin victories underline India’s continued strength in Asian Games kabaddi, with both teams successfully defending their respective titles against the same opponent.
