India Women's Hockey World Cup 2026 campaign received a major boost on Tuesday as the Indian women's hockey team produced a commanding 6-1 victory over South Africa in their second Pool D match at Amstelveen. The emphatic result moved India to the top of Pool D on goal difference and strengthened their hopes of progressing to the next round.

India had entered the contest after a 2-2 draw against China in their opening match. The team responded in style against South Africa, with six different Indian players finding the net.

Six Different Scorers Lead India's Goal Rush

India dominated the contest and built a substantial advantage through goals from Sunelita Toppo, Navneet Kaur, Sushila Chanu, Deepika, Lalremsiami and Sakshi Rana. South Africa managed a consolation goal through Kayla de Waal late in the match.

The scoring began with Sunelita Toppo in the 11th minute. Navneet Kaur then doubled India's advantage in the 17th minute before Sushila Chanu added another in the 25th minute.

India continued their attacking momentum after the interval. Deepika scored in the 38th minute, Lalremsiami found the net in the 44th minute and Sakshi Rana completed India's six-goal haul in the 45th minute.

South Africa eventually pulled one goal back through Kayla de Waal in the 55th minute, but India comfortably secured all three points.

India's Biggest Women's Hockey World Cup Win
The 6-1 victory was reported as India's biggest win in Women's Hockey World Cup history, underlining the scale of the team's performance.

The result also significantly improved India's goal difference, an important factor in the closely contested Pool D standings.

India Move to the Top of Pool D
Following the victory, India and China both have four points from two matches, but India's superior goal difference puts them at the summit of Pool D.

The result has put India in a strong position ahead of their final pool match against England.

England Clash Next

India's next challenge will be England, with the match carrying significant importance for the team's qualification hopes.

Reports indicate that India need only one point from the England match to secure progression to the second round, making the upcoming contest a crucial one for the Indian side.

Strong Response After China Draw

India's performance against South Africa was also a strong response to their opening 2-2 draw against China.

Rather than allowing the dropped points to affect their momentum, India produced an attacking display against South Africa and established a healthy goal difference.

The contribution from six different scorers was another positive for the team, demonstrating the variety available in India's attacking unit.

The comprehensive win has given the team confidence, while their strong goal difference provides an additional advantage heading into the decisive final pool fixture.

India's 6-1 win over South Africa has transformed their position in Pool D and given their Women's Hockey World Cup campaign significant momentum.
