'Insane': Lionel Messi Becomes World Cup's All-Time Leading Scorer
Lionel Messi added another feather to his cap by becoming the top scorer in men's FIFA World Cup history with his 17th and 18th tournament goals during Argentina's 2-0 Group J win against Austria in Dallas on Monday.
The Argentina captain went past former Germany striker Miroslav Klose, whose record of 16 goals had stood since the 2014 World Cup.
The 38-year-old Messi reached the milestone after a well-coordinated team move in the 38th minute.
Messi began the move himself before reaching on the edge of the penalty area to finish with a low cross from defender Facundo Medina.
The goal came after Messi had squandered a penalty wide earlier in the first half.
Then in the fifth minute of added time he fired a low shot to complete his brace and extend his lead at the top of the scoring charts.
Messi had pulled level with Klose with a stunning hat-trick in Argentina's opening 3-0 victory over Algeria.
The Inter Miami forward has now scored five goals to lead the Golden Boot award.
"Messi taking liberties as this World Cup
5 goals in 2 games. All time WC goalscorer… insane!," former England defender Rio Ferdinand wrote on X.
