Jaishankar Says ‘India First’ Drives Policy, Highlights Strong Energy Cooperation with United States
India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar underlined India's national-interest-driven foreign policy approach during a joint press conference with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, emphasizing that New Delhi's decisions will continue to be guided by an "India First" approach.
Referring to the policy outlook of the current U.S. administration, Jaishankar said that the United States has openly articulated an "America First" strategy and noted that India similarly follows an "India First" framework rooted in national priorities.
"Where the United States is concerned, the Trump administration has been very forthright in putting forward its foreign policy outlook as America First. Where we are concerned, we have a view of India First. So both of us are obviously driven by our respective national interests," Jaishankar said.
On energy cooperation, the External Affairs Minister stressed the importance of ensuring India's long-term energy security through a diversified supply chain. He noted that India seeks reliable, affordable and large-scale energy partners to meet the country's growing needs.
Jaishankar highlighted that the United States remains an important partner in this regard due to its capability to provide dependable and cost-effective energy resources. However, he added that India will continue broadening its energy network globally to ensure stable supplies and competitive pricing.
He emphasized that maintaining multiple sources of energy imports is essential to protecting India's interests and ensuring affordable access for its citizens.
The remarks come amid expanding India-US engagement across strategic, economic and energy sectors, reflecting a broader effort by both countries to deepen cooperation while prioritizing their respective national interests.
