Kalyan Banerjee Alleges BJP-Backed Attack, Calls Bengal Situation 'Lawless'
Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee has alleged that he was the target of an attempted murder after being attacked during a visit to Chanditala in Hooghly district on Saturday.
According to Banerjee, he was on his way to meet the officer in charge of Chanditala Police Station and submit a deputation when he encountered severe traffic congestion near Chanditala Market. He said he decided to walk towards his destination with his Personal Security Officer (PSO) when a group of 10 to 15 individuals, whom he described as BJP supporters dressed in saffron attire, allegedly began shouting slogans and verbally abusing him.
The TMC leader claimed that while he was proceeding through the area, a stone was suddenly hurled at his head, causing him to bleed and collapse on the road. Banerjee stated that a CRPF personnel came to his rescue and helped ensure his safety. He expressed gratitude to the CRPF officer but accused the West Bengal Police of remaining passive during the incident.
Describing the attack as an "attempt to murder," Banerjee alleged that the law and order situation in West Bengal has deteriorated significantly. He further claimed that the police acted as silent spectators while the incident unfolded. The alleged attack has triggered a fresh political confrontation between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with both parties expected to trade accusations over the incident.
