Government Ready for Discussion in Parliament: Kiren Rijiju

Kiren Rijiju on NEET-UG Paper Leak became the key development on the third day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament as Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced that the government is prepared to hold a discussion on the alleged NEET-UG paper leak issue. However, he clarified that the timing, duration and format of the debate would be decided after consultations with the floor leaders of all political parties.
The statement came amid continued disruptions in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, where Opposition members demanded an immediate discussion on the alleged examination irregularities and the police action against protesters at Delhi's Jantar Mantar.
Proceedings in both Houses were disrupted within minutes of the day's session beginning on Wednesday. Opposition MPs raised slogans demanding accountability over the NEET-UG paper leak controversy and the alleged police crackdown on protesters.
In the Lok Sabha, Congress MP K.C. Venugopal raised the issue and sought a detailed discussion on the examination controversy. In the Rajya Sabha, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge also pressed for an immediate debate, arguing that the matter directly affects the future of millions of students.
The repeated protests forced both Houses into adjournment shortly after proceedings began, continuing the stalemate witnessed since the start of the Monsoon Session.
Kiren Rijiju Assures Debate on NEET-UG Issue
Addressing reporters outside Parliament, Kiren Rijiju said the government is not opposed to discussing the alleged NEET-UG paper leak.
He stated that the Centre is willing to facilitate a debate after consulting floor leaders from all political parties. According to Rijiju, discussions regarding the duration, timing and format of the debate will be finalised through consensus to ensure a meaningful exchange in Parliament.
His remarks were seen as an attempt to break the ongoing deadlock and restore normal functioning in both Houses.
Opposition Demands Prime Minister's Statement
While welcoming the possibility of a discussion, Opposition leaders insisted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should personally address Parliament on the issue.
Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav demanded a statement from the Prime Minister regarding the examination controversy, saying that students and parents across the country deserve clear answers.
Several Opposition parties also reiterated their demand for greater accountability and reforms in the examination system to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Key Legislation on Parliament's Agenda
Despite the repeated disruptions, the government has continued with its legislative agenda during the Monsoon Session.
The Lok Sabha is scheduled to consider and pass the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, which was introduced on July 20 by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.
The proposed legislation seeks to amend provisions relating to the sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court. However, continued disruptions may affect the progress of the Bill if normal proceedings are not restored.
The NEET-UG paper leak controversy has become one of the central political issues of the Monsoon Session.
The Centre, meanwhile, has reiterated that investigative agencies are taking appropriate action and has expressed its willingness to discuss the issue within the framework of parliamentary procedure.
