Mamata Banerjee Slams BJP Over Alleged Restrictions on Opposition Meetings in West Bengal

Former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the BJP, alleging that the ruling establishment is attempting to suppress opposition voices and restrict democratic activities in the state.

Speaking on the issue of permissions for political meetings, Banerjee questioned why opposition parties, particularly the Trinamool Congress, were allegedly being denied the opportunity to hold public gatherings.

“How can they deny permission? This is not a congested area, it is a public meeting area. When other political parties hold meetings, do they seek permission? We inform the authorities. Does that mean the opposition will not be allowed to speak or hold meetings?” Banerjee said.

She further accused the BJP of trying to control democratic institutions and administrative processes, stating that authorities must function according to established laws and rules rather than political directives.

“Who are they to control the entire system? They have to function according to the law and rules. Now they have completely gone off track,” she remarked.

The TMC chief also alleged discrimination against opposition leaders and workers, claiming that individuals associated with opposition parties are not receiving fair treatment in West Bengal.

“If someone belongs to the opposition, they are allegedly not even allowed proper treatment in West Bengal, while outsiders are. Only Trinamool Congress is being denied. What does that mean?” she asked.

The remarks come amid heightened political tensions between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP ahead of key political developments in the state. The issue has sparked a fresh debate over democratic rights, freedom of political expression, and the role of administrative authorities in granting permissions for public events.
