Carney Calls for Stronger Canada-Europe Alliance

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called for deeper cooperation between Canada and Europe during his address to the European Parliament in Strasbourg on September 17. He described the relationship as being rooted in shared values and complementary strengths.

Carney said Canada and Europe could work more closely across strategic areas including critical minerals, artificial intelligence, energy, defence, space and financial services. He also welcomed the ambition to explore a deeper Canada-European Union partnership, including the possibility of Canada becoming the EU’s first associate member.

In his remarks, Carney said the alliance should be defined by what Canada and Europe support, highlighting freedom, solidarity, prosperity and sustainability. He added that stronger cooperation could build resilience while allowing both sides to maintain their ability to make independent choices.
