They Stay Awake So We Can Rest”: Rahul Gandhi Praises Keralam Nurses in Moving Note

In a deeply personal and emotional reflection, Rahul Gandhi opened up about a night spent at a hospital while caring for his ailing mother—an experience that left a lasting impression on him and highlighted the quiet strength of India’s healthcare workers. Recalling the anxious hours spent on a small sofa in his mother’s hospital room, Rahul Gandhi spoke about the fear and concern that gripped him through the night. Yet, amid that uncertainty, it was a nurse from Kerala who became a source of comfort and reassurance. “She came every single hour,” he shared, describing how the nurse would gently check on his mother, offer a warm smile, and hold her hand—small gestures that carried immense emotional weight in a moment of distress. Reflecting on this, Gandhi said he found himself thinking about countless families across India and around the world who have experienced similar moments of care and compassion from nurses hailing from Keralam. Known globally for their dedication and professionalism, Kerala’s nurses have long been pillars of support in hospitals, often working tirelessly behind the scenes. In a touching exchange early the next morning, Gandhi asked the nurse if she ever slept during the night. Her response was simple yet profound: “I work all night.” That reply, he said, encapsulated a larger truth—while most of the world sleeps, countless nurses, especially women from Keralam, remain awake, caring for patients, offering comfort, and holding hands through moments of fear and vulnerability. “For me, this is the spirit of Keralam,” Gandhi remarked, emphasizing the state’s legacy of empathy, resilience, and service. His heartfelt account has resonated widely, shining a spotlight on the often-unseen dedication of healthcare workers and reminding the nation of the human touch that defines true caregiving.
