West Bengal Assembly Passes Two OBC Amendment Bills
To restructure the state's reservation framework, West Bengal's legislative assembly passed two critical OBC Amendment Bills on Monday.

The Suvendu Adhikari-led BJP government's Backward Classes Welfare Minister Gouri Shankar Ghosh introduced the bills at the state assembly, aiming to bring the state's framework into direct compliance with previous orders from the Calcutta High Court.
The West Bengal Backward Classes (Other than SC and ST) Reservation of Vacancies in Services and Posts (Amendment) Bill, 2026: amends the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) government's 2012 reservation law.
The West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes (Amendment) Bill, 2026 changes the state's original 1993 act governing the functioning of the state's Backward Classes Commission.
The total OBC reservation quota under the state government was capped at 7%, reversing the previous administration's expansion.
The earlier system dividing communities into Category-A (More Backward, 10% quota) and Category-B (Backward, 7% quota) has been sine away with.
The 78 communities listed under the previous 'Category-B' schedule added during the TMC regime were removed, regularising 66 communities that held OBC status prior to 2010.
The fresh definition and future inclusion of any backward class will now be directly determined under the West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes Act.
