Bengal Govt Moves to Introduce Uniform Civil Code
The West Bengal Government is set to introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the State Assembly on Monday, marking what the government describes as a significant legislative reform.
Speaking on the proposed legislation, State Minister Sankar Ghosh said the UCC is one of the most important Bills to be introduced in West Bengal. He noted that states such as Uttarakhand have already implemented a Uniform Civil Code and said similar legislative efforts have been taken up in other states.
"The Uniform Civil Code is one of the utmost important Bills to be introduced in West Bengal. The State Government has decided to introduce the UCC on Monday. States like Uttarakhand have already passed the Bill. This is one of the historical steps taken by West Bengal," Ghosh said.
The proposed Bill is expected to be tabled during the ongoing Assembly session. If introduced, it is likely to generate significant political debate, with supporters describing it as a step toward legal uniformity, while opponents are expected to raise constitutional and social concerns.
Further details, including the contents of the proposed legislation and the Assembly's deliberations, are expected once the Bill is formally introduced.
