₹411 Crore Mission Snehjori Set to Revive Assam’s Muga Silk Industry, Says Scindia

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Tuesday announced the launch of the ₹411 crore "Mission Snehjori" initiative aimed at revitalizing and modernizing Assam’s iconic Muga silk industry. The ambitious project seeks to strengthen the entire silk value chain, from silk rearing and cocoon production to processing, innovation, and global market access.

Speaking at the launch, Scindia said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a “new era” has begun for Assam’s Muga silk sector. The mission comprises six key components designed to boost productivity, infrastructure, technology adoption, and income generation for weavers and silk rearers.

As part of the initiative, the government plans to restart a spinning mill, establish four Common Facility Centres (CFCs) for centralized processing, and set up a digital testing laboratory, an innovation lab, and a tourism park. These measures are expected to provide significant support across the entire silk ecosystem.

Highlighting the economic impact of the scheme, Scindia noted that Muga silk rearers currently earn between ₹18,000 and ₹21,000 per kilogram for their produce. The government aims to substantially increase these earnings, targeting up to ₹50,000 per kilogram in international markets through improved quality, branding, and market access.

,Mission Snehjori is expected to enhance the global competitiveness of Assam’s unique golden Muga silk while creating new livelihood opportunities and strengthening the state's traditional silk heritage.
