Ayushman Bharat and CM Health Insurance Scheme Launched in West Bengal

Ayushman Bharat and CM Health Insurance Scheme have been launched in West Bengal, with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announcing expanded healthcare coverage for millions of families across the state.

The two health insurance initiatives were formally inaugurated at an event held at Netaji Indoor Stadium. According to the Chief Minister, the expanded healthcare coverage will include several treatments that were previously unavailable under the state’s Swasthya Sathi scheme.

One of the key announcements was the inclusion of knee and hip replacement surgeries at no cost for eligible beneficiaries under the newly launched schemes.

Ayushman Bharat and CM Health Insurance Scheme to Cover More Families

Speaking at the inauguration, Suvendu Adhikari said around 1.43 crore families in West Bengal will receive benefits under Ayushman Bharat.

Another 80 lakh families who are not covered under Ayushman Bharat will reportedly receive benefits through the Chief Minister’s Health Insurance Scheme.

The government has positioned the two schemes as an expansion of healthcare access, particularly for families that may face difficulties meeting the cost of major medical procedures.

The Chief Minister also said that the number of treatments covered under the expanded healthcare framework has been increased significantly.

Treatment Coverage Expanded

According to the Chief Minister, the earlier Swasthya Sathi scheme covered around 1,700 medical conditions and procedures.

Under Ayushman Bharat and the CM Health Insurance Scheme, this number has reportedly been increased to around 1,950 treatments.

The expanded list includes major procedures such as knee replacement and hip replacement, which can involve substantial medical expenses.

The inclusion of these procedures is expected to provide greater financial support to eligible patients requiring specialised treatment.

Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes Included in Discussion

Representatives of several private hospitals and nursing homes attended the launch programme, including representatives associated with hospitals operated by the Ramakrishna Mission.

The Chief Minister said the government would also consider suggestions and concerns raised by healthcare providers while implementing the schemes.

The participation of private healthcare institutions is expected to be important in expanding the availability of treatment facilities for beneficiaries across West Bengal.

Amrit Pharmacies and Jan Aushadhi Centres

The state also announced agreements related to the launch of 100 Amrit Pharmacies and 467 Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi outlets.

These facilities are aimed at improving access to medicines and making essential drugs more affordable for patients.

The expansion of such outlets could complement the health insurance initiatives by helping beneficiaries access medicines alongside hospital-based treatment.

Focus on Affordable Healthcare

The broader objective of the initiatives is to increase access to affordable healthcare and reduce the financial burden associated with major medical procedures.

With knee and hip replacement surgeries included in the expanded coverage, eligible patients will be able to seek treatment without having to bear the full cost themselves, subject to the applicable scheme rules and eligibility criteria.

Why August 16 Was Chosen for the Launch

The Chief Minister also explained the significance of choosing August 16 for the programme.

He referred to the historical violence of the Great Calcutta Killings of 1946, saying that the day would now be observed by the state as “Ayushman Day”.
The Chief Minister also invoked the legacy of Gopal Mukherjee while speaking about the importance of healthcare and public welfare.

He urged people to work collectively towards strengthening healthcare facilities and ensuring that people across West Bengal receive access to better medical services.

The launch of the Ayushman Bharat and CM Health Insurance Scheme marks a significant expansion of the healthcare coverage framework described by the state government.
