Tamil Nadu Election 2026: Massive 70% Turnout by 3 PM as Voters Defy Heat in Crucial Assembly Battle
The 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections are witnessing an
extraordinary surge in voter participation. As of 3:00 PM, the Election
Commission of India (ECI) has reported an approximate voter turnout of
70.00% across the state’s 234 constituencies.
Despite the sweltering April heat, long queues have been a constant
sight since the polls opened at 7:00 AM. This high momentum suggests
that Tamil Nadu could be on track to surpass its previous record
turnouts, reflecting a high-stakes battle between the incumbent DMK-led
alliance and the AIADMK-led opposition, with new political entrants
adding to the fervor.
Key Highlights of the 3 PM Polling Status
Statewide Turnout: 70.00% (Approximate)
Highest Turnout Districts: Northern and Western districts, including
Tiruppur, Erode, and Dharmapuri, continue to lead the charts, with some
pockets crossing 75%.
Chennai Update: The capital city, usually known for slower polling,
has shown a significant uptick, crossing the 60% mark in several urban
constituencies by 3 PM.
Star Power at Booths: High-profile figures including Chief Minister
M.K. Stalin, AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami, and actor-politician
Vijay (TVK) cast their votes earlier in the day, drawing massive
crowds.
The Political Landscape
This election is being viewed as a “litmus test” for the Dravidian
Model of governance. The DMK (Secular Progressive Alliance) is seeking a
second consecutive term, while the AIADMK (National Democratic
Alliance) is fighting to reclaim its stronghold.
Adding to the unpredictability is the debut of actor Vijay’s Tamilaga
Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which has reportedly mobilized a large section of
first-time and youth voters. Earlier in the day, Vijay even requested a
two-hour extension for polling to accommodate the heavy rush of voters
at several booths.
