Tripura BSF clash: eight arrested after border-area confrontation
The Tripura BSF clash in Sepahijala district on Monday led to eight arrests, Chief Minister Manik Saha said, after a confrontation between border personnel and local residents. Reports described injuries during unrest linked to an anti-smuggling operation in the Ashabari area.
The accounts differed on the number hurt. One reported four injured Border Security Force personnel, including an assistant commandant; another described three injured personnel and a civilian youth. Police were investigating the incident.
According to the reports, an argument developed after personnel detained a local man on suspicion of smuggling near the India-Bangladesh border. An allegation that he had been beaten with a stick angered residents.
Road blockade followed by confrontation
Residents blocked the Boxanagar-Rahimpur road, disrupting movement through the area. A BSF officer and his team subsequently arrived in a vehicle and became involved in the confrontation.
Police sources cited in the reports alleged that members of the crowd attacked personnel and damaged the vehicle. Footage was reported to show people carrying bamboo sticks and breaking its windscreen.
The Tripura BSF clash prompted medical treatment for those injured. The reports gave different accounts of their initial treatment and subsequent hospital arrangements, while agreeing that personnel were hurt during the confrontation.
A separate report said the civilian youth sustained a leg fracture. It also described police and Tripura State Rifles personnel being deployed at the scene, with the additional security helping restore normal conditions.
Saha condemned the attack on the personnel and announced that eight accused had been arrested. He said those responsible would face action under the law.
An earlier account had reported two First Information Reports but no arrests at that stage. The later statement from the chief minister provided the updated arrest position; the underlying allegations remain under investigation.
