Tusshar Kapoor threat: police suspect impersonator behind Rs 5 crore demand
The Tusshar Kapoor threat inquiry in Mumbai concerns an alleged extortion call demanding Rs 5 crore from the actor, according to reports on Tuesday. Police suspect the caller impersonated a Lawrence Bishnoi gang member after an initial comparison of voice recordings.
The man allegedly introduced himself as Harry Boxer. Kapoor alerted Mumbai Police about the communication, and the matter was assigned to the Crime Branch and its Anti-Extortion Cell.
Reports said the actor's security had been increased following the threat. Police were working to establish who was responsible for the recording and where it originated.
Voice comparison raises doubts about caller's identity
The Crime Branch's technical team examined the recorded communication against an official audio sample of Harry Boxer held in its database. According to police accounts, the voices did not match.
That preliminary finding led investigators to suspect that an unidentified person used the gang's name to frighten the actor and seek money. The claimed affiliation should therefore be treated as the caller's allegation rather than an established connection.
The Tusshar Kapoor threat investigation remains ongoing. Reports said the early assessment did not support involvement by Bishnoi gang members, while efforts to identify the person behind the audio continued.
No First Information Report had been registered at the stage described in the reports. Kapoor was said to have informed police informally, after which the specialist units began examining the matter.
The demand, the claimed identity and the recording are central to the inquiry described by police sources. Investigators had not announced the caller's identity or a confirmed origin for the communication.
The available findings concern the initial technical assessment. They do not establish who made the alleged demand, and police were continuing their work to trace the person responsible.
