3 Ayurvedic tips to stay balanced this summer: From mindful breathing practices to staying properly hydrated

With summer approaching, rising temperatures can take a toll on people of all age groups. Combined with pollution and environmental imbalance—especially across northern parts of India—the season can put added pressure on both physical and mental well-being. In a conversation with HT Lifestyle, Gurmeet Kaur, Co-Founder and Director of Ubalance Naturals, shared simple Ayurvedic practices to help maintain balance and support overall wellness.

Highlighting the essence of the season, Gurmeet said summer is a time to slow down and reconnect with balance rather than push the body harder. She described it as an opportunity to care for the body with greater awareness, rooted in the simple principles of Ayurveda.

According to her, three key habits can help align the body during summer: supporting digestion, staying hydrated, and keeping the system calm. “In summer, less truly becomes more,” she noted.

1. Prioritise hydration
Gurmeet emphasised starting the day with hydration. Drinking a glass of lukewarm water, optionally with lemon or turmeric, helps the body wake up gently and reduces stress on the system.

2. Opt for lighter meals
She recommends choosing light, seasonal foods that are easy to digest and naturally suited to the heat. Avoiding outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours can also help conserve energy and prevent fatigue.

3. Practice gentle breathing
Breathing exercises can benefit both mental and physical health across all age groups. Techniques like Sheetali and Sheetkari Pranayama help cool the body, while Anulom Vilom promotes balance. These can be combined with restorative poses such as Balasana and Viparita Karani. Practicing for just 5–10 minutes daily can help maintain overall calm and balance.
