Captain Shubman Gill Smashes Historic Century as GT Crush RR to Enter Final

A captain’s masterclass from Shubman Gill completely outshone a teenage prodigy’s fireworks as the Gujarat Titans (GT) stormed into the TATA IPL 2026 final. Chasing a massive target of 215, GT pulled off their highest successful run-chase in IPL history, crushing the Rajasthan Royals (RR) by seven wickets with eight balls to spare at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium.

With this clinical victory, GT has set up a blockbuster summit clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

First Innings: Teen Sensation Sooryavanshi Powers RR to 214

After losing the toss and being put in to bat, the Rajasthan Royals got off to a disastrous start. GT’s pace spearheads Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada struck early blows, removing Yashasvi Jaiswal (1) and Dhruv Jurel (7) within the first 11 balls, leaving RR stuttering at 9/2.

However, 15-year-old batting phenom Vaibhav Sooryavanshi turned the game completely on its head. The left-handed prodigy played a fearless, breathtaking counter-attacking knock, smashing 96 off just 47 balls, including 8 boundaries and 7 towering sixes. Along the way, Sooryavanshi became the fastest Indian batter to breach the 1,000-run milestone in IPL history (in terms of balls faced).

Middle-Order Collapse & Late Death-Over Fireworks

Sooryavanshi stitched together a crucial 127-run partnership with veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. The RR innings hit a chaotic speedbump when Jadeja (45* off 35 balls) was briefly forced to retire hurt after taking a nasty blow to the arm. This triggered a mini-collapse as skipper Riyan Parag (17), Dasun Shanaka (3), and Jofra Archer (7) fell in quick succession against disciplined spells from Jason Holder (2/27) and Kagiso Rabada (2/35).

Just when GT threatened to stall the momentum, Donovan Ferreira provided a grandstand finish. Ferreira smoked an unbeaten 38 off just 11 deliveries, launching four mammoth sixes in the final over off Rashid Khan to push Rajasthan to a formidable 214/6.

Second Innings: Gill-Sudharsan Partnership Obliterates RR's Defense

Chasing 215 in a high-pressure knockout game is a daunting task, but the Gujarat Titans openers made it look like a walk in the park. Skipper Shubman Gill and the explosive Sai Sudharsan came out with clear intent, taking the Rajasthan bowling attack apart from ball one to rack up 69/0 in the Powerplay.

The duo orchestrated a spectacular 167-run opening stand off just 77 balls. Sudharsan played a blistering knock of 58 off 32 balls before falling in bizarre fashion—dismissed hit-wicket for the second consecutive game after his bat slipped and clipped the stumps.

Captain Gill’s Flawless Ton Steers GT Home

Unfazed by the breakthrough, Shubman Gill continued his majestic onslaught. The Indian captain registered his 5th IPL century, hammering a magnificent 104 off 53 balls, decorated with 15 crisp boundaries and 3 sixes. He also rewrote history by hitting the fastest century ever by a Gujarat Titans batsman (off just 47 balls).

By the time Jofra Archer trapped Gill LBW in the 15th over, the damage was already done. Washington Sundar (16) fell shortly after, but late boundaries from Rahul Tewatia (17*) and Jos Buttler (9*) guided the Titans over the finish line with ease at 219/3 in 18.4 overs.

Player of the Match: Shubman Gill (GT) for his captain's masterclass knock of 104 off 53 balls, anchoring Gujarat's record-breaking run chase and hitting the fastest century in GT history.

Result: Gujarat Titans won by 7 wickets and qualified for the IPL 2026 Final.
