D.K. Shivakumar Chosen as Karnataka CLP Leader, Set to Take Oath as Chief Minister on June 3
The Karnataka Congress Legislature Party (CLP) has unanimously elected senior Congress leader D.K. Shivakumar as its new leader, paving the way for him to become the next Chief Minister of Karnataka.
Addressing the media after the CLP meeting, Congress General Secretary (Organization) K.C. Venugopal announced that the party's legislators had authorized the Congress High Command to nominate the leader of the Karnataka Congress Legislature Party. Following deliberations, the High Command proposed the name of D.K. Shivakumar for the top post.
Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah formally proposed D.K. Shivakumar's name, which was seconded by Karnataka Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara. The proposal received unanimous support from the legislators present at the meeting.
“I would like to announce that the Karnataka Congress Legislature Party has elected Shri D.K. Shivakumar as its leader,” K.C. Venugopal said.
Following his election as CLP leader, D.K. Shivakumar will visit Raj Bhavan to stake claim to form the government. He is scheduled to take oath as the Chief Minister of Karnataka on June 3, along with members of his council of ministers.
The development marks a significant political milestone for the Congress party in Karnataka and ends days of speculation regarding the leadership of the state government.
