The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed that recent military strikes occurred dangerously close to Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP), raising serious concerns over nuclear safety.
According to the IAEA’s independent analysis of satellite imagery dated April 5, one of the strikes landed just 75 metres from the plant’s perimeter. While the facility itself has not sustained any damage, the proximity of the attack has heightened fears of a potential radiological incident.

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi issued a strong warning, stating that continued military activity near an operational nuclear power plant — which contains significant amounts of nuclear fuel — could trigger a severe radiological accident with far-reaching consequences for people and the environment, both within Iran and beyond.
Grossi stressed that regardless of the intended targets, such actions pose a grave threat to nuclear safety and must cease immediately. He reiterated the agency’s call for all parties involved in the conflict to respect the “seven indispensable pillars” of nuclear safety and security during armed conflict.
Emphasising the global risks, the IAEA chief underscored that nuclear facilities and their surrounding areas should never be targeted under any circumstances.
