The Dutch took the lead in the 72nd minute through Cody Gakpo, who produced an emotional finish just two days after revealing the heartbreaking loss of his unborn son. His goal appeared set to send the Netherlands through before Morocco mounted a stunning late comeback.

The Atlas Lions had threatened throughout the match, with Neil El Aynaoui forcing an outstanding save from Bart Verbruggen in the first half, while captain Achraf Hakimi struck the post and constantly troubled the Dutch defence after the break.

Morocco finally found their breakthrough in stoppage time when substitute Issa Diop powered home a header from Chemsdine Talbi's cross to make it 1-1 and force extra time.

Both goalkeepers produced crucial saves during the additional 30 minutes, but Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerged as the hero in the penalty shootout, making decisive stops as the Atlas Lions prevailed 3-2 from the spot.
With the victory, Morocco advance to the Round of 16, where they will face co-hosts Canada in Houston on 4 July.
