Bird Flu Resurfaces in Maharashtra, Raising Human Infection Concerns

Bird Flu Outbreak in Maharashtra Sparks Health Concerns

A fresh outbreak of bird flu in Maharashtra’s Navapur has triggered concern among scientists and public health experts, with fears growing over the potential risk of human infection. Authorities have ordered the culling of more than one lakh chickens after the detection of the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus, also known as Influenza A H5N1.

The latest outbreak comes only months after thousands of crows reportedly died in the state due to bird flu, highlighting a recurring pattern of infections in Maharashtra.

Experts warn that while bird flu outbreaks among birds are not unusual, the evolving nature of the virus and its increasing spread among mammals are becoming a major concern for global health authorities.

Why Experts Are Worried About H5N1 Virus

According to renowned virologist Shahid Jameel, migratory birds act as natural carriers of the virus and spread it across regions through contact with poultry farms and backyard birds.

He explained that bird flu can infect humans, although transmission remains limited because of biological barriers between birds and humans. However, severe illness and high mortality rates have been observed in infected human cases globally.

The bigger concern, experts say, is the mutation of the H5N1 virus.

Rising Mutation Risk in Mammals

Scientists are closely monitoring how bird flu viruses are adapting to mammals. Traditionally, pigs were considered “mixing vessels” for influenza viruses because they can carry both bird and human flu strains.

However, recent studies have found bird flu infections in cattle in countries such as the United States, increasing fears that the virus may evolve further.

Experts warn that if the virus mutates into a form that spreads easily among humans while remaining highly deadly, it could pose a serious global health threat.

Increased Surveillance After COVID-19

Anurag Agarwal, Dean of Biosciences and Health Research at Ashoka University, said the apparent increase in bird flu outbreaks may partly be due to stronger surveillance systems after the COVID-19 pandemic.

He noted that improved monitoring has helped authorities detect outbreaks faster, especially in states where bird flu cases are frequently reported.

Health experts believe early detection, rapid containment, and stronger surveillance are critical to preventing large-scale outbreaks.

Can Bird Flu Spread From Animals to Humans?

Infectious disease specialist Ishwar Gilada said human infections remain extremely rare.

Globally, fewer than 1,000 human bird flu cases have been reported, while India has recorded only a handful of infections over the years.

According to experts, people most at risk include poultry workers, livestock handlers, and individuals who come into direct contact with infected birds or animals.

Importantly, sustained human-to-human transmission of the H5N1 virus has not yet been confirmed.

Maharashtra Authorities on Alert

The Maharashtra government has intensified surveillance and containment measures in Navapur following the outbreak. Poultry farmers affected by the culling operation are also demanding compensation for heavy financial losses.

Scientists caution that as bird flu spreads to more animal species, the chances of genetic mutations increase, making continuous monitoring essential.
